Whenever you open a program, your computer records it in its prefetching files. Whenever you visit websites, temporary internet files are created. These files allow quicker access to these programs or websites, but over time, these files can build up and actually SLOW down instead of speeding up.
One way to clean up these junk files is to use the Windows built-in one. To access this, go to my computer, right-click your harddrive, and click 'Disk Cleanup'. Under 'More Options', you can choose to delete all but the recent system restore point. Then check the files you want to get rid of and finish the operation.
As we all know, there are usually 3rd party software that can get the job better.
Free:
1. Iobit Advanced Systemcare [http://www.iobit.com/]
3. Glarysoft Utilities [http://www.glarysoft.com/]
4. CCleaner [http://www.ccleaner.com/]
Paid:
1. Tuneup Utilities [http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/]
2. Advanced Vista Optimizer [http://www.systweak.com/VistaOptimizer/]
These software programs also contain additional tools that should be used with care.
